Indigenous data

Indigenous community data make implementation gaps visible. By documenting and reporting their situation, indigenous peoples can enhance their access to justice and development.

Our vision is to put indigenous peoples’ aspirations of development up front, so their rights are respected.

Indigenous Navigator data showcase the situation of indigenous peoples in particular settings across the globe. It can contribute to the global efforts to better document and compare the situation of indigenous peoples worldwide.

Leaving no one behind!

More than ⅓ of the SDGs targets reflect specific articles of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Generally, Indigenous Navigator data on indigenous peoples’ rights and development, can feed into the monitoring of the SDGs from an indigenous peoples’ perspective.

Specifically, the Indigenous Navigator framework has integrated a number of the global SDGs indicators. By collecting data related to the global SDGs indicators, indigenous peoples can:

  • Contribute data for local, national and global SDGs monitoring
  • Generate comparable data to monitor if indigenous peoples are left behind

Data from National Statistical Offices can also be integrated into the Indigenous Navigator Data Portal.

Tested by indigenous communities

What is more important all tools and approaches have been field tested with diverse communities and adjusted to improve clarity and increase guidance on the correct use of the tools. The feedback from the communities has helped us eliminate ambiguous language and develop targeted training materials.

Moreover, our questionnaires offer the possibility of adding evidence and extra information. We believe that as much evidence attached, the stronger the validity of the data. This sustains and justifies the data, allowing others to independently verify the assessments made.

For example, if respondents are answering the question "Have any member of your community been victims of killing, death threat, kidnapping, enforced disappearance, arbitrary detention or torture while defending the rights of the community?" the facilitator can easily attach and provide names of the victims, time and place of the atrocities, reference to reports or/and media coverage.

The Data portal and collecting data

We are pleased to launch the new Indigenous Navigator tools. Many existing surveys and data are available, and more will be published as they are reviewed following the import process.

To ensure the portal provides the best experience, we are also updating our translations in Spanish and French.

We welcome you to apply for an account today and to start exploring our updated tools and resources.

How do I register to collect and upload data?

If you want to upload a submission, you can apply for an account. If you already had an account in the previous tool, you will receive an e-mail with information in the coming days on how to access the system.

Where can I explore the data?

We have two different tools for exploring the data; our Data explorer and Index Explorer. The data explorer visualises all the submitted answers and comments, while the Index Explorer allows users to explore the calculated index values and implementation status.

Thank you for your support and interest in the Indigenous Navigator, and for your patience, as we improve our translations, if you encounter any issues, would like to report a bug or send us feedback, please contact us.
